In 2007 I hitchhiked with my friend Mac Funk from Vladivostok to Moscow, traversing the entire Trans-Siberian Highway. 9000+ miles over 5 weeks. We were traveling with men in convoys moving cheap Japanese cars bought at the port fresh off the boats from Japan, and riding with them as they travelled East. They were usually drunk and smoking with the windows roled up. There are many photos of men smoking, and some children. This was the only grant every given for hitchhiking by the National Geographic Society.
